We are two weeks into the planning of our science fair projects. By the end of this week, the following questions should be answered:

1. The first thing you need to do is figure out what we are going to test. That does not mean that you need a title, we can get that at the end. It does mean that you need to write a question that you plan to investigate.

2. Now that you have an initial question, we need to set limits to what we plan to investigate. Its expected that science projects are fair, so need identify the variables.

Independent variable

Dependent variable

3. We now have a better understanding of the variables that we plan to test and measure, rephrase your initial question in a testable form.

4. A big part of being a scientist is using what you already know about your subject to predict what you think will happen in your project and to justify scientifically why you think so. State a hypothesis based on research, background information or an observed pattern of events.

5. Now its time to design how you are going to test your experiment.

A. List the materials needs for this experiment

B. Identify the variables that need to be controlled for this experiment to be fair

C. Design the methods to test your hypothesis

The activities for today can be done individually or with a partner.

Go to

Complete the VIrtual Hotel (start with the kitchen and restaurant, and then you can do the rest of the hotel). Find the hazards in the rooms, and select the best answer to prevent injury. After completing the hotel, you can do the office or supermarket.

**IF FLASH ISN'T WORKING ON YOUR COMPUTER** complete the following:

1. Research one disease that is caused by the improper handing of food (salmonella, e coli, etc), and write down how it is caused and what can be done to prevent it.

2. Research one disease that is caused by a nutritional deficiency, and write down how it is caused and what can be done to prevent it.

We are starting the planning stages of our STEM fair. The students received a planning sheet that is due on THURSDAY, January 17. If you need a new sheet, please see me for a new copy. There are 4 questions to answer on the sheet:

1 - What are you going to test?

2 - Identify the independent and dependent variables

3 - Rephrase question 1 as a testable question

4 - Research background information on your topic and write a hypothesis for your project

We will be looking more at the scientific method this week

We are finishing our fraction and decimals unit that began before Christmas. Today (Jan 11), we are reviewing fractions. Monday, we will be reviewing decimals, and the test will be on Tuesday, January 15.

Fractions Review:

1. Write the following as a decimal:

a) 2/5 b) 8/25

2. Write as a fraction in its simplest form:

a) 0.125 b) 0.5

3. Order these from least to greatest:

1/2, 2/3, 3/8, 0.3.75

4. Write the follwoing as a decimal:

a) 7/9 b) 5/6

Decimals Review:

1. Evaluate:

a) 0.2 x 0.3 b) 1.25 + 2.34 c) 1.25/100 d) 3.45 - 1.98

2. Evaluate, using order of operations

a) 2.1 + 3.2 x 4.1

3. A bottle of water costs $1.32. How much does it cost to buy 1 for you and for your 5 friends?

4. A rectangular garden is 2.1 m by 3.4 m. How much fence is needed to surround the garden? A bag of mulch will cover 2 square meters. How many bags are needed to mulch the garden?

Last week after completing your wellness wheel activity, you identified a domain and created a goal (emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, or physical). Today, you can either work by yourself or with a group that has a similar goal, and create a plan for that goal. For example, if your goal was to drink more water, you could look up some tips to drink more water, and the benefits of drinking water. You can either create a presentation for the class (like with the information on drinking water), or an activity that you want to do with the class. An example of an activity could be leading the class in five minutes of mindfulness.

Option 1:

Your task is to research the different Biomes and some of the biotic and abiotic factors in each area.

Choose any 3 of the following Biomes:

Biomes: Desert,  Arctic Tundra, Boreal Forest(Taiga),Temperate Forest, Tropical Rainforest, Grasslands

Things to focus on:

1) A map showing the locations of your Biomes on planet earth.

2) Climate (Average rainfall/snowfall? Average Temperature?

3) Major animals/plants found in each biome (at least 5)

4) Adaptations allowing the animal/plant to live in the biomes.

All research on your Biomes will be put together in a project using  PowerPoint and will be presented to the class.

You may work with one partner on this if you wish.

Option 2:

Create a visual representation of one biome (diorama).

Complete steps 1-4 of option 1 for the biome that you selected.

You may work with one partner if you wish.
