Information for Families - Return to School

Posted: September 3, 2020

Welcome back, Knights! We have been sending out communication over the last month, but we wanted to send a summary of information that will help families get ready for a safe return.  Because safety is our number one priority, we have made some changes to our usual routines and operations in order to prioritize our school community's health and well-being during this return to school.

Illness Families are asked to screen their children prior to leaving home. If your child is ill and/or showing 2 or more symptoms of COVID-19, they must remain home until they are not displaying any symptoms.

If your child becomes ill at school, they will be screened for COVID-19.  If they exhibit two or more symptoms, they will be masked and placed in an isolation room and you will be contacted to pick-up your child as soon as possible.  You will come to the main entrance and ring the bell.  Your child will be brought to you at the front door.  It is important that you follow through on phoning 811 for further instruction.  Public Health will ascertain whether your child needs to be tested. If your child does not require a COVID-19 test, they are permitted to return to school 24 hours after a temperature is normal. If your child requires a COVID-19 test, they must stay home until Public Health confirms test results (48 hours).  We ask that in either case, you communicate with the school so we can support your family.

Classroom Bubbles - Students' homeroom classes will serve as their bubble. They will learn, eat, and have leisure time exclusively with the children in their own class. Physical distancing is not required within the bubble.

Masks - All students will need to bring a clean mask to school each day (maybe even two).  Masks will be worn when students are not in their classroom bubble and when social distancing is not possible.  Examples include: transitioning to a different location within the school, entering and leaving the building, going to the washroom, entering and exiting the bus, riding the bus.

Water Bottles - All students need water bottles.  The mouthpiece on the water fountains have been disengaged and students can only fill bottles.

Signage has been posted throughout the school designating where students may walk, wait for traffic in congested areas or when washrooms are occupied.  They must wear masks when using washrooms and travelling through the halls.  Please note, all washrooms are single occupancy.

Busses - All students in ASD-N will have one pick-up location in the morning and one drop-off location in the afternoon.  There will be no alterate stops this year and no bus notes will be issued for any reason.  All children will wear a mask getting on and off the bus; they will follow the direction of the bus driver on seating and mask use while on the bus.  Families can use this link to find out more details about their child's bus information. https://asdnbp.nbed.nb.ca/Default.aspx

Entry to school by visitors- Parent and visitor access to the school will be limited this year. Entry to the building by visitors will be by appointment only.  When parents/guardians need to pick up students in the middle of the day, they will call the school upon arrival or ring the video buzzer and we will send your child out to you.  To contact the office, please call 778-6077.

Pick-up & Drop-off - This area and protocols will remain the same.  What is different are the times; when a child is dropped off in the morning, the window to arrive is 7:50-8:30.  At the end of the day, walkers and pick-ups are dismissed at 2:55, and it happens before we let bus students leave.  This change is to avoid bottlenecks of students in the hallways.  For new Knights, please enter and exit your car as safely as possible.  For parents, please line up in the area to the right of the school.  We ask that parents and visitors not use our staff parking lot during these times as it creates a safety issue for walkers and staff.

Late Students - If your child arrives after 8:30, they will ring the buzzer and identify themselves and their reason for being late to the administrative assisstant.  She will open the door and the child will proceed directly to their classroom bubble.

Student Fee- $30 We want our school community to know that the student fee goes towards locks, supplied materials for learning, classroom technologies that all students have access to, costs for field trips and guest speakers, to off-set provided food costs and other costs that vary by the year, but are intended to support all students.  The student fee does not cover dances or extra-curricular activities.

Cafeteria -Cafeteria services and the breakfast program will be unavailable until at least September 21st.  We will keep parents informed as we receive more details.  We ask that families send their students with a lunch, break snack they can eat in class and have a full belly in the morning until these services are up and going. Please ensure your child has the necessary cultery as none will be provided.
