Parents and Students- Hope you had a good weekend and enjoyed the sun. Here is some work to keep you busy for the week of April 20th-24th.

Math- As always you can spend some time each day working on Dreambox. A great resource to learn new skills and keep you math abilities sharp. Did you try the problem of the week from last week? I have posted the answer if you want to check or give it a try now. I've also posted a new question of the week to try.

Science- For those of you have been enjoying the bird website I am following, this week is bird identification. Check it out at https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u... and look for week 5. The slideshow is great with some cool links for videos.

If birds are not your thing don't forget ASD-N have a new STEM challenge this week. Take a look at http://stemnorth.nbed.nb.ca/sites/stemnorth.nbed.nb.ca/files/doc//y2020/...

This week is all about wind power. Build a pinwheel, a kite or an anemometer. Lots of options on this site for you for all subjects.

As always if you have an questions or problems you can send me a message at marielouise.squire@nbed.nb.ca

Feel free to share anything you have been doing at home. I'd love to see what results you get on wind power or any birds you see in your yard. Don't forget to check us out at https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3 to see what your friends have been up to.

Happy Learning.

Hope you had a good weekend with your family.

This is week 2 of Learning from home. If you have not already emailed me for your Math log in to Dreambox please do at marielouise.squire@nbed.nb.ca.  If you have any questions along the way send me a message and I'll try to find the answer to your problem.

Math- This week everyone should have logged on to Dreambox and started that process. For those who have limited access to the internet15-20 minutes a day is a good start. I also thought that I would supply everyone with a Problem of the week. As time goes on we may increase that to everyday, but lets see how this goes. The answer will be posted on Friday.

Science- This week we are looking at Week 4 at https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u...

The topic this week is Life cycles Birds growing up. Take a look at the slideshow. It contains lots of fun information on matching birds with their parents. If you have the time look at the Bird Cams they are really neat. Watch birds in realtime in their nests. If you have no access to this site try this activity with your siblings or parents  at home.

It's called the Hungry Bird Challenge.

Materials Needed

“Bugs” (dry beans, pennies, or dry rice)

2 Bowls

Try It!

Place your bugs in one bowl and place the empty bowl across the room or yard. That is your “nest.”

You have a nest full of hungry nestlings! How many “bugs” can you deliver to the nest in 1 minute?

What do you think it is like to be a bird parent who might deliver over 6000 bugs in 14 days?

You can also try another activity from this weeks ASD-N STEM team. Growing plants without soil-Hydroponics. See poster in documents sections on this page. Could be fun if you have any beans or seeds at home. Lots of ideas for you and your siblings.

You can also join our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3

Happy learning.

Today my family looked at Week 3, https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u... . Nests and Eggs.

We looked at the parts of an egg, did the experiment in the slide show available, then gathered materials from outside to make our own little birds nest. See Pictures of our results.

I had a great day with my little friends and learned a lot. Hope you have some fun with this website.

Name your game following this format: Game Name, Team Name

Share your game.

Your game/level will be assessed based on the following. You have until April 21st to make changes to your game/level.

  • Functionality: Does the game work?
  • Visual Design: What does the game look like?
  • Gameplay: Are goals and objectives clear? Are game mechanics successful?
  • Programming: Sprites behave as expected. There are obstacles that the sprite can interact with. The level has an appropriate ending. Level has sound effects and background music.
  • Engagement: Is the game fun to play?

You can find a script for basic platformer mechanics in this Scratch project:

https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/152991914/

Today we will be exploring how Scratch can be used to code a platform game.

Your company's goal today will be to:

  1. Create a user account for each team member at https://scratch.mit.edu/
  2. Each person will create a Scratch program that begins with the sprite in the middle of the screen and moves the sprite left, right, up and down using keyboard commands. (See hints below)
  3. Explore more advanced techniques here: https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/How_to_Make_a_Basic_Platformer

Hints:

  • To start in the middle, set x and y coordinates to 0,0
  • You have to create two variables, X velocity and Y velocity. These variables will be initially set to 0.
  • Add smooth velocity ( 'x velocity' x 0.9)

You are going to analyze 3 online platform games. You will have 60 minutes total to analyze the games (20 minutes for each game). For each game analysis, one team member will play the game while the other two team members complete the game analysis form.

You will also sketch a level from one of the games.

Choose 3 of the following games to analyize.
