We have been reading a novel in class called Three Million Acres of Flame by Valerie Sherrard. This is a story based on the Miramichi Fire of 1825.

In an effort to incorrporate Project Based Learning in my classroom, and to showcase student learning, I posed the question, "What was life like in Miramichi in 1825, the year of the Miramichi Fire?"

Students have begun researching various topics that would help to answer this question. They will be required to focus on one element of society (food, clothing, education, healthcare, money, homes/dwellings, government, industries, etc..) and to create a display that explains their findings. We will be working on this in class some, but students may require some extra time on this at home.

Due date for this project is Wednesday, June 5th!

This is some information for parents and a reminder to students about the "Power Play Young Entrepreneurs" program.

Students were given a letter to take home for parents, explaining the program. If you did not receive a copy, please let me know as I have extra copies. This program is designed to teach students some basics about business. They are required to create a product, arrange a loan for start-up money if required, develop a prototype, do market research, produce a product, market, and sell their items during our "End-of-Year Showcase" here at the school the last week of classes.

We have been discussing some possible projects in class. Students will be making these primarily at home and may require your assistance. Lessons on developing a business plan will take place at school.

IStudents now have a little over 4 weeks remaining before the 'market' will take place. I have been asking for them to decide on a product for the past week, but have few who have actually committed to what they will be making. Here are some deadlines that must be met:

1- Tuesday, May 21st - a deciscion for product and a prototype (or a recipe, plan/blueprint) for product must be here to present in class

2- Market Research - completed and tallied by Thursday, May 23rd

3 - Product Description and Operations Plan - Friday, May 24th

4 - Money Plan and Loan Certificate - Monday, May 27th

5 - Marketing -  Thursday, June 6th

6 - Deadline for products - Friday, June 14th

7 - Market - Wednesday, June 19th during the School Showcase

This note is to remind students that they are to be working to complete their Heritage Fair Projects. This assignment is one that does require students to have homework. Although some classtime is provided for doing research, students are expected to work on their projects at home/outside of classtime.

Parents,

Please note:

We began discussing topics and doing some actual research a few weeks before Christmas Break. Students should have a topic and some research already started. Several are writing their reports. A detailed outline/plan for completing this assignment was given in class today. I am attaching a copy here.

Due date for projects is January 21st.

A reminder to students that they are to be reading novels at home every day for at least 20 minutes. They have a goal of completing a novel a month. Remember to record when novels are completed. There should be at least 3 done by now.

Please note that the Olympics celebrations that were scheduled for tomorrow (Friday), have been moved to next Wednesday, February 14th. My homeroom students are asked to wear red and/or yellow on that day, the colours of the flag for China, the country that we will be representing.

Thank you,

Mrs. C

This is a reminder to please return my classroom library books to the classroom as soon as you are finished reading them.

I have personally purchased many of the books on my shelves, and every year I try to update my library with current and popular books that my students request. It is disappointing when students fail to return books, damage books, or destroy them. It is costly to replace them (most cost more than $5.00 each), and takes away from the choices available for my students. I am discouraged by the number of missing books. I will not be able to replace them, and will not be adding any new books unless students return those that are missing.

Please return books as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Please note: The Scholastic Book Orders for the month of November are due on Tuesday, November 21st! The December Book Order forms are here now and will be distributed next week. The due date for the December orders will be Wednesday, December 6th. This is to allow time for the books to be delivered before our Christmas Break.

Book Orders are due on Friday.

Scholastic Book Order forms are in my classroom if students wish to order. The September forms (Arrow, Teen, and Back to School) are due in next Friday, September 22. Please be sure that the order form has the students' first and last name and that the homeroom class is identified (Ex. 6C). Also, when completing the order, specify which book(s) and check the pricing. The cost of the books for New Brunswick are in the column labelled "NB,NS, PEI". (Canada's taxes are different in each province or region.) There is an option for you to pay online with your credit card. The process is explained on the form. I will check to be sure that my name is on the Scholastic list.

Thank you for supporting your child's interest in reading,

Karen Coughlan

Language Arts students are to be reading at home everyday, and recording the title, author, and page in their agendas as outlined in class.

Gr. 7 and 8 students are working on writing "Remembrance Day Essays". Most work is to be completed in class. However, some students may choose to write at home. If the work is not getting completed in class, then students are to complete it at home.

Grade 7 and 8 students have been given an outline for a "Reading Response Letter" which is to be completed by Nov.3. They complete this after they have finished reading a novel. This is the first one assigned this year. More will be assigned throughout the year. Mini Book Reviews are to be completed every time that a student finishes reading a book. These are done on the half-sheet of paper.
