Ms. Squire

Think about this

Well Folks this is your last learning option for this school year. I hope you have had a chance to try out some fun and challenging things. They will be here all summer, so if you didn't get a chance to do some things you can come back anytime.

Math- I would hope that you will be continuing to do Dream Box for as long as you can. You should be working at least 20 minutes a day. I think it will be available to the end of the month.

If you are looking for a no-tech option, you can play cards, sudoku, or any board game. In the past couple of weeks, I have given you a few card games to play. Do you need to practice your times tables? I would suggest you go over them, it is such an essential skill. Have a competition with a sibling or friend.

I've enclosed the solution to the problem of the week from last week. Check it out. If you have not tried it yet, give it a try.

Science- The new ASD-N STEM flyer is available. This week we are building boats. You can try out your boat in a sink or in a bucket outside. You can build your boat out of any material you can find. Look in your recycling bin, you will be amazed of what you can use to make a boat that will float. Have fun.

My suggested activity is to make an Ice Volcano. Let's try a little chemical reaction. Of course, this is something we would not do in school, as it has to be done outside. I think you'll love to watch your volcano fizz and melt outside. I'm enclosing the link to make your Ice Volcano. http://www.readingconfetti.com/2013/08/ice-volcanoes.html

All you need is water, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, a container to make your volcano, and golf Balls(or any balls that will sink).  I hope that you can give this a try and have some fun with Science.

Stay well over the summer and be kind to one another. See you all soon.

Hi guys

I hope you are all well and healthy. This week won't be as hot as last week so we might get a bit more done.

Math- You should all be working on Dream Box if you have access to the internet and a device. This would be time well spent. At least 20-25 minutes a day would be ideal.

I have uploaded the last Problem of the Week. Give it a try. I have also uploaded the answer to last weeks problem.

For a no-tech option how about playing a game of Cheat. See the following link for instructions. It can be played by two or more players. Great for the whole family. Have some fun together. https://www.kidspot.com.au/things-to-do/activity-articles/cheat/news-sto...

Science- The new ASD-N flyer has been included. This week we are cooking. I have enclosed a recipe for Cinnamon Roll Cake in case you cannot access any recipes. You will never make cinnamon buns again after you taste this. Even Mrs. Cabel could make these. Ha

This weeks class assignment is to make Fibonacci Lemonade. I thought we would try something fun and do a little Mathematical Cuisine. I have uploaded the recipe and the website in case you want to try. I had lots of fun making this and it tasted really good. I think I will do it over the summer again. Great surprise for all. It combines Math and Science. http://blog.andreahawksley.com/fibonacci-lemonade/

Fibonacci sequence is a set of numbers where the third number is the sum of the first two numbers. The fourth number is the sum of the second and third numbers, and so on. For example: 0, 1,1,2,3,5,8,13 Who knew this sequence could make a really cool looking lemonade.

Check out the photo I have include of how mine looked. Send me a picture of how you made out with your Fibonacci Lemonade.

Well everyone hope you have a great week and give these activities a try. Learning is everywhere. Math and Science are in most things we do.

Hi friends

I hope you had a lovely weekend and are ready to do some home learning. With the nice weather that is coming this week, get up and do some work early so that you have the rest of the day to yourself.

Math- Dreambox is your go-to for Math. At this point you should be doing about 25-30 minutes a day. If you run into problems or have any questions let me know. I will do my best to help you out. Remember to finish one lesson before you move on to another.

Did you try out last week's problem of the week? If not I've enclosed the question and the answer. I've also uploaded a new question for you to work on. Have some fun and give them a try.

For a no-tech required math practice how about a game of 21.

Object: be the closest to 21 without going over! Each player is dealt two cards to start. Each player has the option to take another card to attempt to improve their hand to the number 21. If they go over or “bust” they get 0 points. If they are the closest to 21 without going over, they get 1 point. If there is a tie, all the players that are tied get 1 point. If they get 21 on the first 2 cards dealt, they get 2 points. The first player to 10 points wins.

Science- the new STEM flyer for ASD-N is ready. Please see the enclosed upload. This week it involves making a Rube Goldberg machine. You can construct one outside or inside. Take a look at how it is done. Get your siblings and friends involved in making one. Only your imagination will limit you.

If you are interested in building things. I thought that this week you could try to make a box that could keep a can or juice box cold(no ice). Use materials you have on hand at home. Look around you will be surprised what you can use. Newspaper is wonderful insulation. You can use this website as a starting guide. https://sciencing.com/make-own-cooler-science-project-6703910.html

You may not have all the materials they use but improvise. Have some fun and send me your photos of how you made out.

Have a great week of Learning. Miss you all.

Dear Friends

I hope that you all had a wonderful long weekend. Here is your home learning opportunities for the week.

Math- Dreambox should be your go-to for Math. If you are unable to log in give me a shout or try the problem of the week. I have noticed in the last week some of you have not logged on. Perhaps you have been busy. Try to make up the time this week.

A new problem of the week has been uploaded and the answer for last weeks has been included. Send me your answers if you like. I'd love to see how you made out.

For no-tech options how about a game of cards: Close Call- Start with a complete deck of cards, Ace = 1, Joker = 0, and all tens and other face cards are removed. Shuffle the deck and deal each player 6 cardsPlayers then select 4 of the cards to create two 2-digit numbers. The object is to create two numbers that when added together come as close to 100 as possible, without going over.

For example, if I selected the cards 2,3,4, and 5. I was then able to create the numbers 53 and 42, which when added together total 95.

The player with the total closest to 100 wins the round and 1 point. In the event of a tie, each player receives a point. After playing 5 rounds, the player with the most points wins. This is a great game for the whole family.

Science- The new ASD-N STEM flyer has been uploaded. Your challenge this week is to observe habitats. You do not have to go far to check this out. Go out on your lawn and get up close to nature. What do you see? There are lots of things, just take a look.

Unfortunately my bird website finished giving us new information as of last week. All the work is still there if you wish to go back and check it out. I thought that since the weather is supposed to be nice this week, we could try and make a sundial outside. Go to https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Sundial for three different options to make a sundial. Take some pictures of your results and share them with us.

Remember science is fun and in everything we do. Have fun and share with us, either to my email or our Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3

Have a great week friends.

Dear Parents and students

I hope that you are all well.

Math- I would love to see you all working on Dreambox for at least 20 minutes a day. If you have any problems send me a message at marielouise.squire@nbed.nb.ca

For a no-tech math experience why not play a game of Go fish for 10. We all know how to play Go Fish, but in this version you ask for a card that will add up to 10, with a card you have in your hand. Aces are worth 1, and remove face cards. This is an easy game but a nice distraction from the usual Go Fish. This is also good practice for addition for your younger siblings.

Did you try the problem of the week from last week? If not, I am including the question with the answer. I am also including a new question, Mr. Richard is going to love this one. It relates to basketball. If you would like to send me your solutions that would be great. I'd love to hear from you.

Science- Well this is the last week I think for the birds website. Go to https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u... and look for week 8: Earth Expedition. This slideshow will take you on a world tour about birds without leaving the safety of your home. Some great videos to watch and neat activities.

The new STEM flyer is included. This week we are purifying water. If you were a member of my Design Block you have a very good idea of how to do this. Remember not to drink your purified water. You have no way to test it. It is a fun activity to try out with the materials you have around your home. Remember, I'd love to see how you make out. Send me your pictures at https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3 or to my email.

Remember cooking is a great way to practice some Math and Science all at the same time. Always ask permission first, as the oven gets extremely hot.

Hello friends

A reminder that all textbooks and novels should be returned when you pick up your personal items. Grade 8's can pick up their things from 9-2 on Wednesday or Thursday from 2-6.

Math- You should all be working on Dreambox. Some of you are spending a lot of time and working hard. Bravo. I am so pleased to see the progress that you are making. It sure will make a big difference when you return to school. 20 minutes a day or more would be great.

If you want a change from computer-based work, work on timetables. Some of you need to practice, especially the 7's and 8's. They are always the tricky ones that everyone gets wrong. You should also practice dividing. Long division is something you should practice. Make your self some long divisions with two numbers as the divisor. Those take longer.

How about a game of cards. Any game where you have to add numbers.

Problem of the week. Did you try last week's problem of the week? I have enclosed last week's problem with the solution and a new problem to work on.

Science- This week we are looking at Bird Behavior- courtship, parental care, feather care, and so on. Look at the slide show about bird behavior. There are lots of cool videos to watch. Learn what the different sounds mean. Birds do talk to each other. Go to https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u... and look for week 7 Bird behavior. Also learn about feathers. It's such a cool site.

This week the ASD-N STEM team has provided and activity on Melting Ice Cubes. See the attached flyer. Your challenge this week is to melt an ice cube without adding heat. I'd love to see what you do. Remember to only change one variable. Let me know how you make out. Try many different things and show us your results.

Personally I might try to make rock candy. Lots of ideas on the flyer.

Happy learning and remember to share what you do. I can be reached by email or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3

Students and Parents-

I hope you had a great week of learning opportunities.

Math- I see many of you have been spending time on Dreambox. Bravo. Continue to work on it every day. 15-20 minutes would be great. If you experience difficulty send me a message and I can help you out. My email is marielouise.squire@nbed.nb.ca

If you get tired of doing Dreambox take a break and practice some times tables. Make yourself a test and see how well you can do.

Did you try out the Problem of the week from last week? I am enclosing the question and the answer. I have also included a new question for this week. Can you do it? Give it a try.

Science- This week at https://www.birds.cornell.edu/k12/science-nature-activities-for-cooped-u... they are looking at Flight and Migration. Take a look at the slideshow. It contains some cool videos on how birds fly and why other animals cannot. They also explore other animals that can fly. I must say this week's slideshow is perhaps one of the best so far. Especially if you are interested in flight and migration.

If birds are not your thing you could do the suggested activities from the ASD-N stem team. See the enclosed flyer. This week it is all about upcycling. Take something in your recycling or trash and make something useful.

As always let me know the results of any activity you have been doing. I can post them on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/stem.squire.3

I hope that you all have a marvelous week of learning. Remember anything you do is learning, from cooking to cleaning and helping out around the house. Take care.
